ENDS’ coverage of prosecutions has been hampered this month by ‘purdah’, the practice of restricting government announcements throughout an election campaign to give parties a level playing field.

During the campaign the Environment Agency issued no press releases on prosecutions or any other subject, apart from one about a possible unexploded bomb (it wasn’t).

The agency said it was acting under instruction from the environment department (DEFRA), which was itself following new Cabinet Office guidelines on purdah.
