UN chooses new climate chief

Costa Rican climate change negotiator Christiana Figueres named new head of the UNFCCC’s secretariat

UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon has named Costa Rican climate change negotiator Christiana Figueres as head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change’s secretariat, replacing Yvo de Boer as executive secretary.

Ms Figueres, a London School of Economics-trained economist, was vice-president of the Conference of the Parties to the convention from 2008-09, and has been a member of the Costa Rican climate negotiations team since 1995. She has represented Latin America on the executive board of the Clean Development Mechanism overseeing UN international offsets since 2007.
