Second plan to export refuse-derived fuel emerges

Hills reveals contract to send fuel from MBT plant to Germany or the Netherlands

Further evidence that UK waste firms are increasingly looking to export refuse-derived fuel (RDF) has emerged. Hills Waste Solutions has confirmed it has signed a contract to send RDF from a planned plant in Wiltshire to either Germany or the Netherlands.

Earlier this month, major waste firm Shanks received consent from the Environment Agency to make two shipments of RDF totalling 40,000 tonnes from mechanical-biological treatment plants in east London to the Netherlands (ENDS Report, May 2010). The shipments will be the first of their kind.
