No consensus on need for landfill bans

Waste firms and business groups have mixed views on whether bans are needed to divert biodegradable and recyclable wastes from landfill

Rising landfill tax means landfill bans are not required to increase recycling rates, according to the CBI, council waste body LARAC, and others.

The comments are made in responses to an Environment Department (DEFRA) and Welsh Assembly Government consultation on the possibility of bans. Issued in March, this said there was “a good case” on bans for biodegradable waste and metals over the next five to ten years (ENDS Report 422, p 31).
