Industry concerned over packaging targets

Responses to the recent consultation on packaging recycling targets question the amount of aluminium and plastic that can be recovered by 2020

Some packaging recycling targets proposed by the previous government for 2020 are unachievable, say materials recyclers, packaging industry associations and compliance schemes. Friends of the Earth (FoE) and council bodies are more optimistic.

Responses to a consultation on future targets, which closed in May, raise concerns over the goals for aluminium and plastic (ENDS Report 422, pp 31-32). The 57% plastics target is a big step up from the 24% rate achieved in 2008. The 70% aluminium target will also be hard to achieve as around 10% of aluminium is in unrecyclable laminate and composite materials.
