Wales goes for 7p tax on carrier bags

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has finally revealed the level of its planned carrier bag tax

The Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has finally revealed the level of its planned carrier bag tax.

Retailers must charge 7p for all single-use carrier bags from March 2011, it says, although they “can set a higher [charge] if they wish.” The level – far below Ireland’s €0.22 (18p) bag tax – was revealed in June in a consultation on the charge.1 The consultation includes draft regulations.

WAG announced it would go ahead with the tax last year (ENDS Report 418, pp 19-20) despite heavy criticism from retailers (ENDS Report 417, p 44).
