Household appliances may soon bear ‘A+++’ efficiency labels, after the European Parliament approved an update to the EU’s energy labelling Directive.

A+, A++ and A+++ categories will show how much better the product is than the old A grade, but consumer groups have condemned the move.

The new scheme was agreed after MEPs voted down plans to introduce labels showing how much better than an A-grade a product was in percentage terms (ENDS Report 412, p 38). The proposal was considered too confusing.
