Commission issues UK final warning over particle pollution

Legal proceedings were initiated in 2009 because of the high levels of coarse particles in London’s air

The European Commission has issued the UK with a final warning of legal action over high levels of coarse particles (PM10) in London’s air.

The pollutant is linked to cardiovascular disease and is thought to kill thousands of people every year.

EU member states should have complied with limits on PM10 levels set under the Clean Air for Europe (CAFE) Directive before 2005.

The UK had been trying to get this deadline delayed until June 2011, especially for London where particulate levels remain high, largely because of vehicle emissions.
