One in seven face redundancy at Arup

Consultancy Arup will lose about one seventh of its UK staff

Consultancy Arup will lose about one seventh of its UK staff. In a statement issued on 7 September, the firm confirmed it would implement a redundancy plan. Some staff may be redeployed, but “up to 600” of its 3,888 UK employees are at risk of losing their jobs. Arup employs about 300 people in the UK who focus on the environmental marketplace.

The firm started a 90-day consultation on 6 September with all those affected. Arup told ENDS it would provide more details when the  consultation closes. Arup cited economic uncertainty, market weakness and public sector cuts as factors and aims to “match resources to [its] current and anticipated workload”.

Arup is the latest consultancy to blame the cuts for damaging its business prospects (ENDS Green Consultancy Review 2010, pp 5-8). AEA was another. It made 99 of its staff redundant this summer (ENDS Report 427, p 7).
