New coal-fired power station for Scotland?

Ayrshire Power, a joint venture between DONG Energy and Peel Energy, has lodged a planning application with the Scottish Government to construct a new coal-fired power station at the port of Hunterston, north of the existing nuclear facility.1

The 1.6-gigawatt supercritical seawater-cooled plant would be fuelled by up to 14% biomass. It would include demonstration-scale carbon capture and storage from the outset, while emissions of nitrogen oxides would also be abated.

Formal public consultation on the plans ended on 20 August. Friends of the Earth Scotland’s response attacked the plans as incompatible with last year’s Climate Change (Scotland) Act.
