Legal challenge to waste PFI cuts expected

The government’s announcement that it will scrap seven waste private finance initiatives has left councils reeling. Some may decide to challenge the decisions

Councils affected by the government’s decision to withdraw support for seven waste private finance initiative (PFI) schemes in October’s spending review are considering their next moves (ENDS Report 429, p 6).

Under PFI, councils are awarded subsidies for new waste treatment plants, but the environment department (DEFRA) says the cuts will save £3m by 2014/15 and more in the longer term.
