Sewage NPS paves way for cleaner Thames

The government has issued another national policy statement aimed at speeding up the planning process, this time for sewage treatment works.

The environment department (DEFRA) is consulting on a waste water national policy statement (NPS), which should make it far easier for Thames Water to get planning permission for its ‘super sewer’.1

The NPS, issued in November, outlines how the Infrastructure Planning Commission (IPC) should consider applications for new wastewater treatment plants that have a capacity exceeding 500,000 population equivalent, or alterations to existing plants that will lead to a similar increase.
