Local enforcement for paint rules proposed

The Environment Department (DEFRA) has issued a consultation on transferring the monitoring and enforcement of rules on the solvent content of paints to local authorities.1

As these powers have already been delegated in Northern Ireland, the proposals cover England, Wales and Scotland.

The proposals include the development of a code of conduct for selling paints for historic buildings and vehicles which do not comply with the EU paints Directive. A previously mooted licensing scheme was rejected as burdensome, as the market for such products is small.

The consultation closes at the end of March.
