Chemical to be banned from paint stripper

Paint stripper containing the chemical dicholoromethane will be banned for consumer use across the EU.

The European Parliament’s Environment Committee proposed a blanket ban, but it is opposed by a small group of governments led by the UK.

Under a compromise agreement, member states will be able to make exceptions for licensed professional use under strict conditions.

Industrial uses will also be more strictly regulated, with a maximum occupational exposure limit to apply in all member states.
