Thinning Arctic sea ice at near record low

Arctic Ocean sea ice began expanding on 12 September with the onset of winter, having shrunk to the third-lowest level on record. Only 2007 and 2008 have seen smaller sea ice minima, says the US National Snow and Ice Data Centre, using satellite records going back to 1979.
