Envirosol ordered to suspend operations

Hazardous waste firm Envirosol was ordered to suspend operations at its Dudley transfer station in January after it breached the conditions of its pollution prevention and control permit.

The Environment Agency served it with a suspension notice on 3 January after officers discovered waste being treated and stored inadequately. The breaches included inadequate segregation of incompatible wastes; failure to assess, sort, segregate and label wastes after two weeks of receiving it; and unstable storage of containers. Chemicals had also been incorrectly labelled.

PPC Compliance Officer Iain Storer, who carried out the inspection, said that even a minor accident at the site could have escalated "putting staff and surrounding businesses at risk of fire and toxic fumes."

The Agency lifted the notice on 5 January after Envirosol addressed its concerns.
