Clarification: ‘Agency reconsiders incinerator permits’

Our February issue reported that the Environment Agency last year revoked the permit for Veolia’s proposed Newhaven incinerator to avoid a legal challenge from Friends of the Earth (ENDS Report 397, p 17 ).

In fact, the High Court ordered the permit be quashed on 5 December, following a complaint from a resident. The Agency had agreed to this course of action the day before a judicial review on the permit was due to start.

We also reported that the Agency had revoked Waste Recycling Group’s permit for its proposed incinerator in Salt End, Hull. It had in fact issued a revocation notice, which WRG had until 8 March to appeal. WRG did not appeal and aims shortly to resubmit its permit application.

Veolia’s permit is already in the process of being redetermined by the Agency.
