Agency allows winter UV disinfection turn-off

The Environment Agency is to permit Northumbrian Water to stop disinfecting sewage discharges outside the bathing season, enabling it to save energy and reduce carbon emissions. But the regulator has set a high hurdle for companies to jump; it is not clear that other firms will wish to follow Northumbrian’s lead.
