River model exposes phosphate inputs

Scientists have developed a model which quickly calculates the proportion of phosphate in a river that comes from point and diffuse sources.1 It can help assess clean-up strategies for river nutrient pollution. It works on the principle that point inputs, like sewage effluents, usually stay constant regardless of river flow. Diffuse inputs, such as farmland run-off, increase as river flow increases.
