WRAP sets target to recycle mixed plastics

The Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP) has revealed further details of how it will develop mixed plastics recycling in the UK.

In June it issued a report saying such recycling was financially viable and set a target for at least 40,000 tonnes of capacity by 2011 (ENDS Report 401, pp 17-18 ).

WRAP says it will run trials to stimulate investment in UK sorting and recycling facilities from September. These will include a sorting trial at a material recovery facility, and a commercial-scale recycling trial, that will also examine how to manage material that is unsuitable for recycling.

WRAP will also undertake a detailed cost-benefit analysis of recycling options for mixed plastics to show they are commercially viable.
