Heathrow decision delayed a second time

The government has again delayed its decision on expansion at Heathrow airport amid reports of cabinet divisions over the issue. Transport secretary Geoff Hoon told the House of Commons he needed more time to consider the evidence and will make an announcement in January.

But he reiterated the government’s support for expansion, saying: "The 2003 White Paper made clear that given the economic benefits to the UK, the government supports the further development of Heathrow...subject to meeting strict local conditions." In November he told Parliament a decision would be made before Christmas, following former transport secretary Ruth Kelly postponing a decision in July (ENDS Report 402, p 7 ).
