Commission owns up to poor environmental record

Implementation of the EU's sixth environment action programme is "far from satisfactory" and environmental pressures are increasing, the European Commission said today

The EU is not "on the path of sustainable environmental development", the Commission warns in a Communication on its mid-term review of the programme.

The programme was launched in 2002 as a framework for environmental policy until 2012. The review looks at the extent to which the priorities of climate change, nature and biodiversity, health and quality of life, and natural resources and waste need to be revised for the period until July 2012.
