Changes to N Ireland’s Renewables Obligation

The government is consulting on a draft order to allow Northern Ireland’s Renewables Obligation to function when the single electricity market is introduced across Ireland in November.1

When the market is introduced, all electricity generated in Ireland and Northern Ireland will be sold into a "wholesale pool" before being sold to suppliers.

This will make it difficult to confirm if renewable electricity generated in Northern Ireland is actually sold to customers in the country - a requirement of the Renewables Obligation.

The order would allow generators and suppliers to agree contractual arrangements that assume any renewable electricity put into the pool was actually sold to a named supplier.
