Small landfill gas excluded from PPC

Pollution prevention and control regulations have been amended in Northern Ireland to exclude smaller landfill gas engines.

From 20 May, landfill operators will not require a PPC permit for engines with a capacity of 3-50 megawatts. The Department of the Environment has decided these can be adequately controlled under a waste management licence. Larger engines will still need a permit.

The amendment also requires service stations to have a permit to meet international obligations for tighter controls on volatile organic compounds emissions (ENDS Report 370, p 43 ).
