Products policy should stay in-house, says DEFRA

The creation of a sustainable products unit within government would provide a quicker route to the systematic assessment of the environmental impacts of products than a new executive body, according to a consultation paper issued by the Environment Department (DEFRA) in December.1 A key issue is whether such a unit should focus on a few mass-market products or adopt a broader, shallower scope.
