Drought puts south-east on standby for standpipes
The Environment Agency has warned that parts of the south-east may see standpipes on the streets if water companies do not impose hosepipe bans by the beginning of April. Months of dry weather have also set the scene for the government to give the go-ahead for compulsory metering.
