REMAS: The findings

The REMAS analysis tested four hypotheses:

  • A positive relationship between the level of specification of a site’s EMS and the quality of its environmental management activities (EMAs).

  • Well-managed sites are more likely to seek certification to high-specification EMS standards.

  • A positive relationship between the quality of a site’s EMS and its performance in terms of emissions and process efficiency.

  • Whether there is a positive or negative relationship between the quality of a site’s EMS and legislative compliance depending on the mechanism at work.
