The pharmaceuticals industry is one of the UK's most successful sectors. UK companies have discovered more leading medicines than any other country apart from the US, and as much as the rest of Europe combined. It is one of the world's largest pharmaceutical exporters by value. The industry accounts for about 0.6% of GDP and employs 73,000 people.
