EIA regulations amended to improve public participation

The government has issued four sets of regulations to apply the EU public participation Directive’s requirements to the environmental impact assessment regime.

The regulations refer to forestry projects in England and Wales1, agricultural water management projects in Northern Ireland2 and in England and Wales3, and the Welsh planning system4.

They introduce requirements to publicise EIAs and decisions, and to increase public access to information.

The water resources regulations are amended so that only projects requiring a licence under the Water Resources Act 1991 - those where more than 20m3 is abstracted a day - are subject to an EIA.
