Research on climate impacts of food industry

A research network has been launched to research how the food industry can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Food Climate Research Network brings academics from seven universities together with companies such as Sainsbury's and Unilever, trade associations and representatives from four Government Departments.1Funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council for three years, the network will research the whole food chain, from agriculture through to food processing, distribution, storage, cooking and waste treatment. The research will include new technologies, consumer behaviour and policy measures.

The food industry accounts for around 20% of UK greenhouse gas emissions and the Environment Department (DEFRA) plans to publish a food industry sustainability strategy by the autumn.
