End of the line for tallow-burning
The Environment Department (DEFRA) has refused to seek a derogation for tallow under the EU waste incineration Directive that would have allowed rendering plants to continue using it as a fuel.1 The decision means that up to 100,000 tonnes per year will have to find new markets - while renderers will switch back to heavy fuel oil.
