Where next for EU environment policy?
The European Union has been the driving force behind environmental legislation in the UK for the past 30 years. But Europe is changing. Expansion eastwards combined with an economic downturn in "old Europe" has reduced the appetite for further environmental lawmaking. The recent referendums in France and the Netherlands have crystallised the debate on whether Europe should respond to globalisation by reinforcing or retreating from its high environmental and social standards.
