Move on sector climate targets in Scotland

Scottish First Minister Jack McConnell has confirmed that the Scottish Executive intends "to set our own, challenging climate change targets in areas of devolved responsibility."

The move follows a call for sectoral targets in a major report from the Scottish Parliament (ENDS Report 365, pp 39-40 ). At present, Scotland is committed only to making an "equitable contribution" towards UK targets on greenhouse gas emissions - but in practice is lagging considerably behind the rest of the UK.

The Executive is now working on the detail of the targets as part of the review of its climate change programme. The targets are likely to cover individual sectors of the economy - but an over-arching Scottish target remains unlikely.
