Go-ahead for green business support

The Environment Department (DEFRA) has confirmed funding to help businesses reduce waste and improve resource efficiency during 2006/07

The £95 million funding package will be used to expand DEFRA’s business resource efficiency and waste (BREW) programme, which recycles landfill tax revenue. The money for 2006/07, which follows £43 million this year, will go towards free services and targeted business support.

New to the programme will be improvements to the Environment Agency’s NetRegs portal on environmental legislation; £237,000 for the Strategic Supply Chain Group, a network led by Manchester University to promote sustainable procurement; and £2 million for the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts to support resource efficiency.

In addition, the Carbon Trust will receive £25 million to help organisations reduce emissions and respond to climate change (in addition to the £35 million announced in this week’s pre-Budget Report). Envirowise will receive £19 million to help businesses tackle waste, water and energy, and the remaining funds will be split between other organisations targeting waste, resources and product design.
