Agency calls for specialist environmental judiciary

Individual magistrates and district judges should be nominated to handle environmental cases, the Environment Agency told the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee at the opening session of its inquiry on environmental crime in January. The Agency also suggested that sentences other than fines could be used to punish large companies, and backed the emerging idea of civil penalties.
