Lead stabilisers withdrawn from PVC water pipes

UK pipe manufacturers have met the December 2003 deadline set by the Drinking Water Inspectorate to halt the use of lead stabilisers in PVC drinking water pipes. They have switched mainly to calcium-zinc stabilisers, which do not carry lead's health risks. However, lead continues to be used in other PVC pipes and products such as window frames and cables.
