The UKETG was set up by the Confederation of British Industry and the Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment in 1999 on a short-term basis. The industry-led group played an important, though informal, role in the development of the UK emissions trading scheme.
UKETG members, which include emitters, trade associations, brokers, consultants and other service providers, have now agreed to put the group onto a formal footing funded substantially by member subscription. Some 70 organisations have agreed to subscribe.
The group stresses that it "is not a lobbying organisation - its primary objective will be to facilitate and stimulate emissions trading and expertise in emissions trading". Its immediate priority will be "to support, represent and inform UK businesses and installations covered by the UK and EU schemes", and to advise the Government on their implementation.
