Castle Cement gets green light to use tyres as fuel

The Environment Agency has announced that it has given Castle Cement permission to use chipped tyres as a fuel at it Ribblesdale site following a five month trial last year. Castle is limited to using tyres to supply 25% of heat at its most modern kiln at the site. Two old kilns are due to stop operating at the end of 2005. The Agency recently proposed easing the regulation of waste burning in cement kilns in the face of looming restrictions on the disposal of tyres in landfills (ENDS Report 351, pp 43-44 ).
