Fur flies on aviation and climate

A bitter dispute has erupted between the Department for Transport (DfT) and the House of Commons Environmental Audit Committee over the Government's policy on air travel. The Government's Sustainable Development Commission has also attacked the DfT's offhand approach towards aviation's climate change impacts. The Government, and parts of the UK aviation industry, are pinning their hopes on bringing European flights into the EU emissions trading scheme from 2008 - but the European Commission warns that the timetable is highly ambitious.
