DEFRA outlines plans to overhaul hazardous waste rules
Plans to replace "special waste" controls in England with a new regime to regulate hazardous waste have moved a step closer after the Environment Department (DEFRA) circulated a preliminary draft of a forthcoming consultation paper. The draft legislation abolishes the requirement to pre-notify the Environment Agency before consigning hazardous wastes - but sites producing "significant" quantities will have to register, submit periodic returns and face Agency inspections.
