Grasping the nettle of sewage odour

Water companies are facing an increasing number of complaints about sewage works odour and are finding it difficult to secure the go-ahead for investment in abatement equipment. Although statutory nuisance provisions have now been confirmed as the main regulatory framework for sewage odour, specialist practitioners believe odour standards developed under the pollution prevention and control (PPC) regime might provide a firmer foundation for abating sewage smells.
