Anglian escapes fine through consenting loophole

A loophole in a discharge consent has allowed Anglian Water to escape conviction for polluting six kilometres of a stream with effluent containing sludge. The case is likely to trigger the Environment Agency to revise similar consents as soon as possible. On the same day that the judgment was announced, Anglian was fined almost £33,000 after admitting two further pollution incidents in a separate case.
