UK 'to pay twice' for nitrate clean-up
The public will be forced to pay twice over to clean up nitrate pollution caused by farming, delegates to a London conference on land use and water heard in November. The EU water framework Directive will require radical changes in land use which are likely to need public subsidies, while the legacy of contamination in groundwater means that water customers will continue to pay for treatment to reduce levels in drinking water for decades to come.
