BPEO removed from waste planning guidance

The Government is proposing that the concept of best practicable environmental option (BPEO) should be removed from the national waste strategy because it is a major barrier to gaining planning consent for facilities. The decision comes amid the launch of a major Whitehall consultation exercise on revised guidance on waste planning and on municipal waste strategies. The package also includes a proposal to provide centralised advice to regions on forecasting waste arisings, recycling performance and treatment capacity.
