The WEEE Directive: New challenges for appliance recycling

Ways of enabling householders to return a huge range of old electrical appliances for recycling must be established in the next two years if the UK is to meet the deadline set by the new EU Directive on waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE). As manufacturers, retailers and local authorities lobby to minimise any new financial or operational obligations, familiar concerns are emerging over the Government's ability to agree on treatment standards and permitting procedures in time for new recycling infrastructure to be established.
