Government urged to abandon 'timid' waste policy

The Government should make bolder use of the landfill tax, allow councils to introduce variable waste charging, and ensure that taxes and subsidies give more support to recycling than incineration, according to a report by the House of Commons Environment Committee.1 The MPs welcome recent Government initiatives in waste policy, but warn that resources in Whitehall and the Environment Agency remain stretched.
