Commission proposes diluted Directive on mine and quarry wastes

An EU Directive on the management of waste from mines and quarries was proposed by the European Commission in June. The test has been softened to exclude some wastes from control or regulate them lightly, and a proposed duty on Member States to remediate polluting old minerals waste facilities has been scrapped. Financial guarantees are likely to be the most contentious issue.
