Nitrate leaching study puts Government on the spot
Farmers will need to take tougher measures to reduce nitrate leaching in order to protect groundwaters, research by the Environment Agency has shown. A long-awaited study of trial areas set up in 1990 has concluded that it is possible to reduce nitrate leaching by changing farming practices, but it may take decades and existing measures are likely to be inadequate, particularly in eastern areas.
