Water fluoridation stirs passions in the Lords

A Government amendment to open the way to fluoridation of drinking water supplies was inserted late in the Water Bill's passage through the House of Lords in July. The proposal stirred impassioned debate, with peers raising questions of human rights, the best ways of remedying social inequalities in dental health and the health hazards of fluoridation - with the strength of the scientific case for fluoridation a particular bone of contention.
