Self-regulation emphasis of eco-design Directive

Proposals for an EU framework Directive on eco-design of energy-using products were published by the European Commission in August.1 They rely heavily on self-assessments by manufacturers against future European standards, and are intended to spur sectors to offer voluntary commitments to improve the environmental performance of their products. Concern remains that they may imperil the contribution of tighter energy efficiency standards to the EU's greenhouse gas targets.
